Biomedical & Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing methods that have been used on the planet for more than 2500 years.

Clinical evidence shows that acupuncture has its own particular value in offering holistic rather than symptomatic treatment. It is effective for a large proportion of health problems, particularly in the area of pain management. Acupuncture is a safe, low cost treatment that is easy to perform and has no side effects if performed by a trained osteopath or physiotherapist.

In OsteoandPhysio Clinic the following types of Acupuncture are applied:

  • Traditional Chinese Acupuncture
  • Biomedical (or Western) Acupuncture
  • Electroacupuncture
  • Otoacupuncture
  • Cranial acupuncture
  • Laser Acupuncture
  • Treatment with suction cups

Most people place the roots of this ancient healing method in ancient China. The science of acupuncture is based on the observation that some energy pathways associated with the pathways of key nerves or groups of neurons, called meridians in acupuncture, play an important role in the functioning of the human body.

In their course there are some points, where we intervene with mechanical stimulation (by inserting needles into the skin), we improve the disturbed flow of energy, thus having a therapeutic effect.

Biomedical Acupuncture is the Western version of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is the historical evolution of traditional Chinese acupuncture, and is based on the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture and the description of a biological mechanism of action, described as neuromodulation.

The therapeutic process of acupuncture begins by inserting the needle into the skin, subcutaneous or muscle tissue at neuroactive points called acupuncture points.
The repetitive treatment process and the selection of the appropriate acupuncture points for each case will reduce pain, restore muscle dysfunction and dyspraxia, normalize the control and regulation of organ function, regulate immunity and endocrine, autonomic and brain functions, while at the same time activating and accelerating processes of restoration and regeneration of dysfunctional tissues.

We also know from studies that traditional Chinese acupuncture, biomedical acupuncture and low frequency (2Hz) electro-acupuncture have analgesic action due to the activation of a cationic analgesia system that produces endogenous opioid peptides and is subject to the control of the hypothalamus and the perihypothalamic grey matter, areas of the central nervous system from which the body’s endogenous analgesia systems emanate.
The analgesic action of Acupuncture is accompanied by a strong and prolonged sympatholytic action, which patients describe as a feeling of calm, euphoria, relaxation and rest.

Acupuncture regulates:

  1. The endogenous analgesia systems
  2. The neuro-hormonal stress control system
  3. The immune system
  4. The endocrine system

And it helps conditions related to the dysregulation of these systems, always taking into account the biopsychosocial (holistic) model of health and illness.
